Q: What part of the racket is Zylon® used in?
A: A racket is made of different types of wood glued together. To bring out the functionality of Zylon®, it is used as a special material in sheet form between the layers of wood. (See illustration)Three types of Zylon® are used—ZL Fiber, ZL Carbon, and Super ZL Carbon. ZL Fiber is pure Zylon®, while ZL Carbon and Super ZL Carbon are materials made from Zylon® woven with carbon. All three are staple products for Butterfly rackets.

Q: How did the development take place?
A: Development began in 2004. At first we were concerned with increasing resistance properties, and while trying to develop a new material we happened to discover Zylon®. We were disappointed that Zylon® could not be used for the original intended purpose, but it showed a high modulus of elasticity and because of its light weight, we wondered if it might be possible to use Zylon® as a material for the inner part of the racket. We encountered some difficulty finishing the edge of the racket, but finally in 2007 we were able to commercialize rackets using Zylon®, such as the Photino. As a table tennis racket manufacturer, we are dealing with very fine measurements. Every gram of weight and every millimeter of thickness counts. Zylon® has superb properties, so we were willing to put in many years of effort to finally bring products to market using the material.

Toyobo’s PBO fiber, Zylon®, is a super fiber with the world’s highest level of strength and elastic modulus (resistance to being deformed). We asked Shigeyuki Ebata, president of Osaka-based Hasco Enterprises Inc., about the first-ever use of Zylon® in snowboards.

Q: How did you first become aware of Zylon® and get the idea to use it in a snowboard?

A.I like motorcycles and I first heard about Zylon® as a material used in motorcycle riding suits. When I researched its features I thought it might enhance the properties of a snowboard. After several years of testing, in 2012 we came out with a snowboard that incorporated Zylon®.

Q: What are the advantages of using Zylon®?

A.The best things is that you can make the board stronger without adding any weight. Carbon is another reinforcing material, but with carbon alone the board will break if you apply too much force. Combined with Zylon®, though, the board becomes hard to break. Another big difference is that with a certain amount of force or greater, the board reinforced with a combination of Zylon® and carbon will bend and spring back more easily (greater elasticity). Also, there is less vibration than with carbon alone.

Q.What kind of snowboarders are the boards made with Zylon® meant for?

A.They are mainly for freestylers, who do half pipes, jumps, and other tricks besides downhill. For example, when doing an “ollie” (bending the nose up and jumping), because the board bends more easily, you can jump higher. Also, boards with Zylon® in the center of the board don’t vibrate as much at high speed, which means a more stable ride.
