CSR through Business Activities

The "ECO-PARTNER SYSTEM®" Product Strategy

The products of the Toyobo Group are used for a variety of purposes in everyday life. We believe that our corporate social responsibility includes actively conserving the global environment and contributing to the achievement of a sustainable society through these products, so since 1998, we have been developing the "ECO Partner System®"as a unified brand for our environmental products.

Assessing products using the Eco-Product Check Sheet

We use the Eco-Product Check Sheet to evaluate the degree to which the environmental burden is reduced across the whole of the product life cycle, from the product raw materials through to manufacture, distribution, utilization and disposal; products that meet the accreditation criteria of the Toyobo Group are promoted and publicized as "ECO Partner System®" products.

As well as evaluating whether the product reduces the environmental burden compared with existing products, in terms of such aspects as CO2 reduction through energy conservation or energy conversion, reduction of the quantity of resources consumed, such as raw materials, packaging materials or water resources, reduction of the use of hazardous chemical substances, or reduction of waste products, the Eco-Product Check Sheet assesses a wide range of criterial, such as increased product life, biodegradability and recyclability.

Making EcoReviews a Requirements for Research and Development

From fiscal 2002, Toyobo has been conducting EcoReviews at the research and development stage at the Toyobo Research Center, with a view to evaluating and reducing all environmental impacts throughout the product life cycle. From fiscal 2006, the scope was expanded to encompass all product development, production technology development and infrastructure facility development at all of our worksites, and EcoReviews were made a requirement of the development process. EcoReviews are conducted before design reviews at each stage, checking research and development from an environmental perspective.

CSR from the Perspective of the Films and Functional Polymers Field

What is the Films Business of the Toyobo Group?

What is the Films Business of the Toyobo Group?

With an abundant range of materials, including polyester, nylon, polypropylene and polyethylene, and against the background of Toyobo's technological strength in our specialty fields of film formation and surface processing, we are developing a wide range of applications, from electronics-related components, such as thin displays and components for use in printing and information recording to films for packaging foods, including wrapping materials for fresh foods, retort packaging and PET plastic bottle labels.

What is the Functional Polymers Business of the Toyobo Group?

What is the Functional Polymers Business of the Toyobo Group?

Toyobo provides products such as molding compounds, paints, adhesives and printing materials for electrical and electronic equipment and automotive components, contributing to making a variety of industrial products lighter, smaller and more sophisticated, and reducing the environmental burden. In particular, making use of such characteristics as high strength, heat resistance and high elasticity, the engineering plastics of the Toyobo Group are used in engine covers, mirrors and joint boots as a substitute for metal, contributing to lighter, higher-performance cars.

How Will Toyobo Contribute in the Future?

Toyobo's technological base in the films and functional polymers sector consists of "polymerization", "modification" and "processing", and we are developing products that will contribute to society and the environment by combining these technologies. For example, in the future, as the average age of society increases more rapidly, we will endeavor to provide appropriate packaging materials that meet the requirements of universal design, as well as utilizing recycled resins and speeding up development of water-based paints, in order to respond to the tightening of regulations relating to solvents.

CSR from the Perspective of the Industrial Materials Field

What is the Industrial Materials Business of the Toyobo Group?

What is the Industrial Materials Business of the Toyobo Group?

Through the provision of diagnostic enzymes and diagnostic agents that stem from research into yeast use conducted during the 1940s, and the provision of gene analysis technologies and reagents used in biotechnology research, Toyobo is supporting doctors and researchers.

Moreover, as well as working on hollow fiber membranes for use in kidney dialysis equipment, reverse osmosis membranes for use in seawater desalination and medical equipment, making use of the polymer technology that we have cultivated through our textile business, we are also manufacturing pharmaceutical products and accepting commissions to conduct tests, utilizing the drug formulation and testing technology cultivated through our pharmaceutical research, in order to contribute to advances in medical care.

How Will Toyobo Contribute in the Future?

Toyobo is supporting increasingly sophisticated medical care and life science research, with regard to such aspects as enzymes used to check blood sugar levels in diabetics and reagents used in genetic research at universities and other research facilities.

Moreover, Toyobo is providing products that contribute to frontline medical care, such as hollow fiber membranes for the artificial kidney machines used in dialysis treatment and antithrombogenic materials that make it harder for blood clots to form.

At the same time, with membranes for use in water treatment, Toyobo is making a contribution by meeting growing worldwide demand for desalinated water, particularly in the Gulf States of the Middle East.
