Aluminum Catalyst for Polyester Polymerization

Aluminum Catalyst for Polyester Polymerization

Polyester Resin Toyobo GS catalyst® (front), antimony-basedcatalyst (right), and titan-based catalyst (back)

New catalysts for polyester polymerization without heavy metals are being actively developed due to their eco-friendly nature. Toyobo has successfully developed a creative and revolutionary catalyst activation technique that dramatically improves the catalytic activity of aluminum, which had until now been considered a poor activity.

The polyester manufactured using this catalyst is superior overall in terms of polymer color tone, thermal stability and manufacturing cost compared to polyester made using established catalysts such as antimony, germanium or titanium. This new development has attracted considerable attention from polyester manufacturers around the world.

XENOMAX®(Polyimide Film)

XENOMAX®(Polyimide Film)

Development of finer wiring and denser packaging in electronic device fabrication has advanced dramatically, furthering the realization of an ubiquitous society. In the electronics device fabrication, an insulator film with a minimal dimensional change under a thermal cycling is critically desired in the devices. This is because it should ensure a better thermal reliability and process yield of products.

XENOMAX®, newly developed by Toyobo, shows a very low CTE (Coefficient of Thermal Expansion) of about 0∼3ppm/K, nearly equal to that of silicon, which has never been achieved with conventional organic films. Toyobo has also developed a film of just five microns-one of the world's thinnest insulation films-which has been certified by UL. Toyobo has a strategic plan to bring this film to the advanced microelectronics component market within two years.

Fuel Cell Membranes

Fuel Cell Membranes

The commercial viability of fuel cells is eagerly anticipated as a clean and efficient power generating device for automobiles, household water heaters, and portable devices. Toyobo is developing the polymer electrolyte membranes that form the key component of fuel cell technology by integrating polymerization, processing, and analysis for polymers.

Toyobo's hydrocarbon polymers membranes currently in development have also drawn much attention in the field of portable and mobile applications, as the permeability of methanol is significantly lower than that of conventional membranes, providing ample durability.

SHINEBEAM® (Hydrolysis-resistant polyester film for solar cell backsheets)

SHINEBEAM®
(Hydrolysis-resistant polyester film for solar cell backsheets)

The hydrolysis-resistant polyester film SHINEBEAM® has been developed for solar cell backsheet use for the purpose of environmental load reduction. It provides weather resistance including hydrolysis resistance and heat durability, and is environmentally friendly because no heavy metals are used in the polymerization process. Toyobo has developed and sells two types of film, a clear type that is optimal for the outermost layer of backsheet, and a white type that has excellent reflectivity and weather resistance for inner layer uses.

(Natural ingredients for cosmetics)

Skin care products to counter aging, skin roughness and other skin problems have expanded in the market in recent years, with a particularly strong tendency in favor of natural ingredients.

Toyobo has developed technology to efficiently produce the naturally derived raw ingredients for naturally derived skin care cosmetics. These raw materials have been revealed through scientific testing to be effective for moisturizing and antiaging, and have drawn considerable interests from the cosmetics industries.

GENECUBE® (fully automatic gene analyzing system)

GENECUBE® (fully automatic gene analyzing system)

GENECUBE® is a genetic testing instrument which can identify pathogens. It is the world's first instrument which can conduct automated genetic testing using biological samples other than blood. This system can shorten the time previously

required for analysis by about 40 minutes. GENECUBE® will be used for various applications, including the selection of effective medicines.
