SurfMellow®is a ceramide-like glico-lipid, which is produced by plant yeast from olive oil. The handling and blending of the hydrophobic humectant are easier than those of ceramide.

The yeast of SurfMellow®

The yeast was discovered on the flower in Mt. Tsukuba. The moisturizer is thought to be released from the yeasts to protect themselves from dried environment.

Toyobo's fermentation technology

Toyobo achieved the mass production of the glico-lipid by fermentation under cooperative research with AIST.

Chemical structure and physical property

SurfMellow®consists of (1) fatty acid from olive oil, (2) mannose and (3) erythritol. The average of lipid length is Carbon number=10 (ranged from 8 to 14). Two lipid chains are bound to sugar, so that, the structure resembles to Gemini-type surfactants and ceramide. This glico-lipid shows lamellae and liquid crystal formation. Elongated lamellae are observed on SurfMellow® water interface.

The picture

The moisturizing action of SurfMellow®

The moisturizing action of SurfMellow® was evaluated with 3D skin model, "TESTSKIN™". When the model skins were exposed with SDS, the intercellular lipids are removed, and then cell death was observed due to water loss. On the other hand, when the damaged model skins were treated with SurfMellow® contained lotion, cell survivals were observed with more than 0.1% concentrations.

The quantitative results were summarized in the figure shown below. We speculate that the glico-lipid penetrate into intercellular space, and retained moisture. Additionally we have obtained the hair protection data.
