Toyobo Co., Ltd. has become a constituent of the FTSE Blossom Japan Sector Relative Index created by FTSE Russell, a global provider of benchmarks.

The index was developed to measure the performance of Japanese companies that demonstrate strong environmental, social and governance (ESG) practices in each sector. It is designed to be sector-neutral to minimize sector bias by matching weights with those of the underlying index. As for companies that emit large volumes of greenhouse gases, the index selects only those evaluated highly by the Transition Pathway Initiative* tool to assess management quality in terms of their efforts to reduce emissions.

*The initiative assesses the management of their greenhouse gas emissions and of risks and opportunities of decarbonizing.

The investment index is adopted by Japan’s Government Pension Investment Fund (GPIF), the world’s largest pension fund, as a benchmark when making ESG investment judgements. Toyobo has also been selected for three other indices adopted by GPIF to evaluate ESG-based practices of Japanese firms: the FTSE Blossom Japan Index provided by FTSE Russell, the MSCI Japan ESG Select Leaders Index and MSCI Japan Empowering Women (WIN) Select Index both provided by Morgan Stanley Capital Investment Inc. of the United States.

Under its corporate philosophy, “Jun-Ri-Soku-Yu” (adhering to reason leads to prosperity), the Toyobo Group will continue to “create the solutions needed by people and the earth.” The Group is committed to adopting business management practices based on sustainability, such as by building a company-wide system to reduce emissions and attain carbon neutrality. Going forward, the Group aspires to remain a company trusted by society and that contributes to making society sustainable by solving social issues through its business activities.
