Toyobo Co., Ltd. has been selected for the first time as one of the 275 companies listed as Asia-Pacific Climate Leaders 2023*1, recognized for its outstanding record in combating climate change in a survey conducted by Britain’s Financial Times and German research firm Statista.

The survey covered companies headquartered in any of 14 countries and regions in the Asia Pacific. Each company’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions intensity*2 was calculated based on data submitted by companies. Also under scrutiny for evaluation and ranking were CDP scores in environmental disclosure and performance, as well as whether their GHG targets had been validated by the Science Based Targets (SBT) initiative.

The Toyobo Group recognizes global warming/climate change as a major threat to the continuation of its business activities. It has set a target of achieving carbon neutrality, or net zero in GHG emissions, by the end of fiscal 2051. Toyobo has made active efforts to save energy and improved its production efficiency. Its targets of reducing GHG emissions in Scope 1 and 2 by 27% over fiscal 2021 and those in Scope 3 by 12.5% (also over fiscal 2021) by the end of fiscal 2031, were validated by SBTi as Science Based Targets*3 in December 2022. In March 2023, the Group was chosen for the second consecutive year as a Supplier Engagement Leader (the highest ranking) by the CDP*4, a British non-profit organization that runs a global disclosure system on supply chain environmental impacts. Toyobo’s efforts to address climate change received high marks from the Financial Times and Statista, leading to its Asia-Pacific Climate Leaders selection.

Based on its corporate philosophy of “Jun-Ri-Soku-Yu (adhering to reason leads to prosperity),” Toyobo aims to be a group that will “create the solutions needed by people and the earth.” It is pursing sustainability-based management, as demonstrated by the Group’s “ideal state in 2030,” “sustainability indicators” and “action plans,” all of which are stipulated in the Toyobo Group’s Sustainable Vision 2030*5, its long-term vision. Going forward, Toyobo Group will promote energy-saving activities as well as decarbonization efforts through fuel-source conversion; introduce and procure renewable energy; and consider introducing carbon-free fuels. Moreover, the company will expand the use of recycled and biomass materials, and sales of the highly efficient equipment for VOC (volatile organic compound) emissions treatment and membranes for seawater desalination and other eco-friendly products. By taking these measures, the Group will do its best to reduce its GHG emissions and those of the entire supply chain, thus helping to realizing a sustainable society.
