"TOYOBO WINDOW"

To mark the 140th anniversary of its foundation, the head office was relocated and the monument "TOYOBO WINDOW" was created.

On the occasion of our 140 year anniversary, we moved our head office in May 2022.

"TOYOBO WINDOW," a new monument in the visitor lobby "Future Space," was created by glass and stone craftsmen in Japan under the supervision of Taku Satoh, a graphic designer who also created the corporate logo. Through this window, we hope to bring our technology and materials to everyone and help solve problems for people and the earth.

In addition, the stone carvings that hung from 1917 to 1974 at the front entrance of head office have been relocated to the "Historical Space" at the reception entrance.

"TOYOBO WINDOW" is set up in such a way that visitors can look into the future from a wide perspective when looking through the window to the entrance, and can see the history of Toyobo (the stone carving installed in head office) when turning to the other side.

The Bank of Japan’s new 10,000-yen note, released in July 2024, features the likeness of Toyobo founder Eiichi Shibusawa. Shibusawa will become a more familiar face as people encounter his portrait on the currency. Here, we will explore the relationship between Toyobo and Shibusawa.

Eiichi Shibusawa played a significant role in the establishment of Toyobo’s predecessors, Osaka Boseki and Mie Boseki, and was dedicated to their growth and success. Serving as an advisor to both companies, Shibusawa mediated their merger, leading to the creation of Toyobo in 1914. The name "Toyobo" was chosen by Shibusawa with the hope of it becoming the foremost spinning (boseki) company in the Orient (Toyo).

Toyobo Group's Corporate Philosophy: "Jun-Ri-Soku-Yu"

Our corporate philosophy is “JunRi-Soku-Yu” (Adhering to reason leads to prosperity), one of the mottoes of our company’s founder, Eiichi Shibusawa.

On April 13, 1921, Toyobo's founder Eiichi Shibusawa (then 81 years old), gave an hour-long lecture at the company headquarters. He spoke of morality, ethics, and the history of the spinning industry, after which he wrote out his personal motto in Japanese calligraphy: "Jun-Ri-Soku-Yu".

This phrase comes from the Northern Song Dynasty Confucian scholar Cheng Yi, and is generally interpreted as "Focus on what must be done and prosper." However, Shibusawa Eiichi, whose "harmony of morality and the economy" was well-known, was more likely to interpret this phrase as more positive and proactive: "Adhering to reason leads to prosperity."

Shibusawa sent this message to us, that by eschewing what is selfish or morally objectionable, and by actively doing what is just and ethically sound can grow our business and enrich the world. In 2019, Toyobo officially systematized the Toyobo Group philosophy of "Jun-Ri-Soku-Yu", as a reflection of the coming era.

"Jun-Ri-Soku-Yu" serves the base of the Principle (P) of our PVVs, with our Vision (V) to be a company that achieves prosperity through focusing on what must be done. To Toyobo, this means not only providing materials, but creating new value through ingenuity and fresh ideas, which we use to provide solutions that serve the ultimate value chain: one that includes not just our customers, but the planet and all its people.

We've established our TOYOBO PVVs as the foundation upon which we work tirelessly to enrich society and continue to evolve as a company.

His vision of "Jun-Ri-Soku-Yu" has transcended time and has come to live on as our guiding corporate philosophy.
