Embracing the Challenge of a New Field
The Toyobo Group entered the bio business in the 1940s. Toyobo was then involved in producing pulp as a raw material for rayon. Yeast which was discovered in the pulp production waste water was researched for processing pulp waste water. This yeast research became the trigger for Toyobo's biotechnology business. Toyobo subsequently suspended its yeast-related business, but recognized the potential of the enzyme uricase, which breaks down uric acid, and pursued its research. "At that time, we were trying to advance into the biotechnology field as a new business outside the field of textiles. We needed some kind of a biotech product for market entry." - Hattori and Masuoka
As a result of this enzyme research, Toyobo released the uric acid diagnostic reagent "Uricolor-400" in 1978. That was a small but solid step for Toyobo's entry into the life sciences field. Then in 1982 Toyobo began marketing life science reagents for academic researchers using enzyme technologies. Today, Toyobo is releasing not only diagnostic reagents and enzymes for diagnostic reagents, but also diagnostics instruments one after another.
Product Development Using Toyobo's Strengths
Our flagship product for Toyobo diagnostics instruments, which is used on the front lines of medical service is the USCANNER® urinary sediment analyzer. This device can analyze sediments in urine (e.g., red blood cells) very rapidly. The processing capacity is100 persons in one hour. The process which includes sample preparation and image processing, is fully automated to save the precious time and effort of laboratory technicians. Patients have been satisfied with reduced hospital waiting times, because USCANNER® can obtain accurate results from its high-resolution image analysis program and improved testing efficiency. USCANNER® is gaining recognition in the clinical testing market as an innovative instrument on the front lines of medicine.
Hospitals are now challenged by the serious problem of personnel shortages, and they are seeking both greater accuracy and higher efficiency in diagnostics testing. In this environment, the Toyobo Group is promoting higher quality and efficiency in laboratory testing by providing high-performance and compact diagnostics products. "In addition to our know-how in developing reagents, the Toyobo Group includes a company (Miyuki Elex Co. Ltd.) with expertise in electric equipment manufacturing. We would like to utilize our strengths in developing integrated system including equipment with reagents, and to create products which delight both medical practitioners and patients." - Diagnostic System Department General Manager Shizuo Hattori
Toyobo Releases Testing Devices One after Another to Meet Clinical Needs
Compact Chemiluminescent Autoanalyzer POCube®
POCube® is useful all around the hospital, especially inside emergency wards and hospital rooms, because it is compact and can provide results in just about five minutes. This autoanalyzer is presently measures C-reactive protein. The test items will be increased to cover influenza virus and other clinical items, to make POCube® even more convenient.
Full Automatic Gene Analyzing System GENECUBE®
GENECUBE® is a genetic testing instrument which can identify pathogens. It is the world's first instrument which can conduct automated genetic testing using biological samples other than blood. GENECUBE® will be used for various applications, including the selection of effective medicines.
Explanation of Terms
- Enzymes are protein molecules which function as catalysts for chemical reactions inside the body.
- Uric Acid
- Uric acid is a waste product (metabolic decomposition product) of cells inside the body. High concentrations of uric acid in the blood can be a cause of arterial sclerosis and other diseases.
- Red Blood Cells
- Red blood cells (erythrocytes) are one of the main components of blood. The presence of red blood cells in urine is believed to indicate some sort of internal organ disorder.
- C-reactive Protein
- C-reactive protein (CRP) is a type of protein that appears in the blood when internal inflammations, such as fever and bacterial infection, and organ damages occur.
- Reagents for Life Sciences
- These are reagents using enzymes which remove genetic material, enzymes which increase genetic material, etc.
